Album release dates could be changed to Fridays worldwide
In an attempt to tackle piracy, the music industry is considering allocating a global album release date, with Friday the most likely day to be designated.
Currently, new records are released in the UK on Mondays and a day later in the U.S, with Australia recently setting Fridays as their chosen day of new releases. This has meant that many albums have already found their way online before music buyers in other countries have had the chance to purchase them.
According to Billboard, the new policy could come into affect as early as July 2015. However, there are still many obstacles hindering the plans. “This global streetdate is necessary for the industry but unfortunately it will be awkward for the physical retailers to change their ways of doing business,” a label executive told Billboard.
