8 Emerging Artists from Spain to see at Primavera Sound 2016
Primavera Sound returns to Barcelona’s Parc Del Forum this week with one of the summer’s strongest line-ups that boasts some of the biggest names in music including Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala and PJ Harvey to name a but a few.
However, it’s not all about the big names and Primavera has developed a strong name for itself as a champion for local acts and upcoming artists from Spain. For anyone looking to reach out and make the most of their time at Parc Del Forum, we have scouted out the best of the emerging talent and highlight our 8 top picks of the weekend.
Núria Graham
Hailing from Barcelona and of Irish decent, Núria Graham began to really catch people’s attention with the release of 2015’s ‘Bird Eyes’ and the more recent release of new EP ‘In The Cave’.
With her delicate yet piercing, PJ Harvey-style delivery and jangling electric guitar- and a really rather brilliant, fuzzed-up cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ - she is not only a definite must-see this weekend, but almost certainly someone to keep an eye on in the next 12 months.
Big Summer
Since forming in 2012, and describing themselves as a purely ‘dreampop’ band, this Barcelona-based quartet have created a reputation for blending laid-back, meditative melodies that slowly seep into your subconscious. Tracks such as ‘Velvet’ are super-soft garage goodness that will provide the perfect feel-good backdrop for the weekend.
Kelly Kapøwsky
This Barcelona-based five piece draw together dark synths with brooding lyrics and will be bringing their intense live-show to Parc Del Forum this Saturday. Having formed around 2 years ago, it is recent single ‘Horses’ that shows what they are capable of. It’s a stark but striking track that builds as lead singer Maite Weinhold cries “the horses are coming” over crashing guitars and gives a taster for what upcoming debut album “Phantom City” could sound like.
My Expansive Awareness
My Expansive Awareness are the Zaragoza-based band that draw bring together heavy riffs with Velvet Underground-esque synths. Having self-released their self-titled debut last year, the band have toured Europe and will be bringing the likes of the accusative ‘Do You Wanna Be Rich?’ and the stripped-back track ‘I’m Dead’ to the Barcelona sunshine.
The Saurs
The Saurs emerged apparently out of nowhere, and went on to become the winners of the Pop Rock Villa de Bilbao competition.
As representatives of the underground Pop-Punk scene in Barcelona, the trio will bring their electrifying riffs and tracks such as the catchy ‘Thursday’ from last year’s debut album Magic Shapes’ which was released on El Segell del Primavera. Fun, bold and sure to grab your attention.
Wind Atlas
With the release of their second LP entitled “Lingua Ignota” last March, Wind Atlas have firmly cemented themselves as an intriguing and darkly beautiful quartet, building songs that sit around the darker side of folk but always deeply rooted in their gothic-inspired centre. Experimental, and constantly sounding as though they come from another age or century, the Barcelona-natives will bring their hair-raising set to the festival on Sunday.
Twin Drama
Garage-pop duo Twin Drama are a simple concoction of sun-soaked fun that will guarantee to keep the Martini bar in Barcelona thriving with energy on Sunday afternoon. Xavier Mohedano and Fernando Herrero are here for a good time and with the surf-pop of ‘Everywhere’ and infectious, fell-good riffs of ‘Marie-Lou’ it should be nothing short of a party.
Shinkiro
Blending krautrock with intergalactic riffs and more traditional style rock, Shinkiro have been described as one of the rough diamonds from the local scene in Barcelona. ‘Oscillation Remedy’ perfectly demonstrates their knack for creating hypnotic tracks that slowly embrace you into their other-worldly sound.
