2013 on track to become the biggest year for single sales in chart history
The Official Charts Company is predicting that 2013 will become the biggest year for single sales in UK chart history, NME reports.
Last year, total single sales in the UK rose 6 per cent to 188.6 million, with digital sales accounting for 99.6 percent of this figure. In 2013 so far, download sales of singles are up 2.5 per cent at the mid-year mark compared with this time in 2012, setting the record for most singles bought.
Daft Punk’s number one single with Pharrell Williams, ‘Get Lucky’ has sold over a million copies thus far, while Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ – also featuring Williams – has sold over 828,000 copies. Both singles have helped make 2013 on the best selling singles years of all time.
Sales forecasters are suggesting that if the figures continue to experience such a hike that we could be well on our way to experiencing the best year for single sales in the history of the chart countdown.
