Kurt Cobain's estate hits out at "unauthorised" opera adaptation of Gus Van Sant's Last Days film
Kurt Cobain's estate has criticised the recent Last Days opera, which is based on Gus Van Sant's 2005 film of the same name, calling it "an unauthorised attempt to benefit from the brief meeting set up with Kurt and Gus Van Sant".
Earlier this month London's Royal Opera House put on an opera adaptation of Gus Van Sant's 2005 film, Last Days, which is a fictionalised account of the final days of a musician called Blake, who is loosely based on Kurt Cobain. The opera included a Danny L Harle-produced song by Caroline Polachek titled "Non Voglio Mai Vedere Il Sole Tramontare", but the estate of the late star has since criticised the adaptation.
Consequence reports that Cobain's estate said in a statement, "Last Days has been created and written without permission. This show, just like the movie, is an unauthorised attempt to benefit from the brief meeting set up with Kurt and Gus Van Sant. This one meeting has been exploited for profit for thirty years now and enough is enough."
In response, a spokesperson from London's Royal Opera House said, "The Royal Opera's production of Last Days is adapted from Gus Van Sant's cult film of the same name, released in 2005. It is a fictionalised account, and was produced with the permissions of Gus Van Sant and HBO."
The Last Days opera ran from 7-11 October at the Royal Opera House.
