Jewel backs Chappell Roan setting boundaries with fans: "I’ve had hundreds of stalkers in my career and it’s not ok"
Jewel has shown her support for Chappell Roan amid online controversy of her trying to set boundaries with her fans.
Chappell Roan initially posted a video explaining that she doesn't feel safe in public, and asked for people to understand that she might not always be up for taking photos or being touched by strangers. This led to controversy online, and her having to write an extensive post to clarify her thoughts.
"I understand that this is jarring to hear from a person in my position. I’m not afraid of the consequences for demanding respect. Just to let you know, every woman is feeling or has felt similar to what I’m experiencing. This isn’t a new situation," she wrote. In a final video, posted after the written statement, Chappell Roan said: “Now you know how I feel. When a woman is upset and says something the automatic response is to be like ‘yo chill.’ It’s not chill, so I’m not going to be chill.”

Hayley Williams came to her defence via her Instagram Story as she wrote: “read the whole thing and the caption too. this happens to every woman i know from this business, myself included. social media has made this worse. i’m really thankful chappell is willing to address it in a real way, in real time. it’s brave and unfortunately necessary.”
Now Jewel has also shared her thoughts on the matter, with a focus on those telling Chappell Roan that she has chosen the wrong career if she doesn't like the attention: "[My hair] went grey overnight when I was 21 years old with my first daughter. It was so scary. This person was leaving fire bombs outside my house. I was getting death threats saying I would be shot from the stage. I’ve had hundreds of stalkers in my career and it’s not ok. It made me step back from my own career. I quit after Spirit, because it was just too much. I have a lot of trauma from my childhood, so fans grabbing me, touching me, turning me around, crowding me, just wasn’t good."
Adding that Chappell Roan has her "full support", Jewel continued: "I’m glad people are talking about it. It’s something people typically just haven’t talked about. I’m proud of what you’re doing... I hope you all know that everybody is worthy of compassion. Even if you’re rich. Even if you’re famous. We must show, if that’s a value of ours, to have compassion. To be tolerant, we have to be willing to understand the joys and the struggles of other people’s lives."
Adele recently gave advice to Chappell Roan: "do what you've gotta do baby girl, you're phenomenal".
