Jay-Z shades Grammys for Album of the Year snub towards Beyoncé
During the 66th annual Grammy Awards which took place last night (4 January), Jay-Z took a moment to snub the organisers for not recognising Beyoncé's work in their Album of the Year category.
Whilst accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, for his contribution to the music industry, Jay-Z highlighted the fact that whilst she is the highest awarded artist in the history of the Grammys, Beyoncé has never won Album of the Year.
"We want y'all to get it right. At least getting close to right. And obviously it's subjective. Y'all don't gotta clap at everything. Obviously it's subjective because, you know, it's music and it's opinion-based," he said, at the start of his speech. “I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”
Noting that he gets tells the truth when he gets nervous, he added: "You know, some of you gonna go home tonight and feel like you've been robbed. Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don't belong in a category."
Across the evening, Phoebe Bridgers the most wins, her first award of the evening was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Ghost in the Machine" with SZA, and she later accepted three more awards as part of Boygenius – Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song (“Not Strong Enough”), and Best Alternative Music Album for their debut the record.
