Janelle Monáe returns with new single "Float" featuring Seun Kuti and Egypt 80
Janelle Monáe is back with her first new single since 2021, "Float", which features Seun Kuti and Egypt 80.
"Float" marks Monáe's first new release since 2021's "Say Her Name (Hell You Talmbout)" protest song featuring Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Chlöe x Halle, Tierra Whack, Zoë Kravitz, Brittany Howard and many more, and sees her unite with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80.
A press release states that those close to Monáe say "Float" was inspired by "Muhammed Ali talking shit in Zaire", and other things including Mary Poppins’ umbrella, Aladdin’s magic carpet, Raul’s toast on 1 December, and Bruce Lee’s mighty philosophy on being "shapeless, formless," and becoming one with your surroundings, to be like water.
She's yet to follow up her 2018 album Dirty Computer. The "Float" artwork does appear to show a tracklist of some kind, so hopefully it's part of a new album coming soon.
Janelle Monáe's "Float" single is out now on Wondaland Arts Society/Atlantic Records.
