FKA twigs' Calvin Klein advert banned for presenting her as “a stereotypical sexual object”
FKA twigs featured in Calvin Klein's Spring campaign which was released in March 2023. The "in Calvins or nothing" advert has now been banned due to complaints against it presenting twigs as "a stereotypical sexual object".
As reported by The Guardian, the Calvin Klein advertisement has been banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority, on the grounds that it presented her as “a stereotypical sexual object”.
In a statement replying to some complaints, they wrote: “The ad used nudity and centred on FKA twigs’ physical features rather than the clothing, to the extent that it presented her as a stereotypical sexual object”, and said the “image’s composition placed viewers’ focus on the model’s body rather than on the clothing being advertised”.
it’s an honour to be the new face of @calvinklein and to have worked so closely with some of my dearest friends to create something that i believe reflects me as a woman and artist #ad pic.twitter.com/N9ElliuND6

The banned advert has been deemed as “irresponsible and likely to cause serious offence”, and “must not appear again in the form complained of.”
Calvin Klein has defended the FKA twigs advert, saying: “The images were not vulgar and were of two confident and empowered women who had chosen to identify with the Calvin Klein brand, and the ads contained a progressive and enlightened message.”
FKA twigs is yet to share a statement regarding the advertisement's ban.
