Ed Sheeran reveals he never gave permission for his voice to be used on Band Aid 40
Last week, Band Aid announced that they will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their charity single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" with a new version featuring different eras of the track mixed together.
Ed Sheeran, who is featured on the 40th anniversary edition alongside Harry Styles, George Michael, Sinead O'Connor, Seal, Kool and the Gang, Boy George, Sugababes, Sam Smith, Bono and Chris Martin, originally featured on the 2014 edition of the track.
He has since taken to his socials to reveal that he was never asked for permission to use his vocals. “My approval wasn’t sought on this new Band Aid 40 release. Had I had the choice I would have respectfully declined the use of my vocals," he shared. “A decade on and my understanding of the narrative associated with this has changed, eloquently explained by @fuseodg. This is just my personal stance, I’m hoping it’s a forward-looking one. Love to all x.”
Taking to his own Instagram Story, Fuse OD shared why he refused to take part in Band Aid 40. "While they may generate sympathy and donations, they perpetuate damaging stereotypes that stifle Africa’s economic growth, tourism, and investment, ultimately costing the continent trillions and destroying its dignity, pride and identity," he shared.
"By showcasing dehumanizing imagery, these initiatives fuel pity rather than partnership, discouraging meaningful engagement. My mission has been to reclaim the narrative, empowering Africans to tell their own stories, redefine their identity and position Africa as a thriving hub for investment and tourism."
The 40th anniversary edition of "Do They Know It's Christmas" will be released on 25 November.
