Donald Glover is set to take over writing duties on the Disney+ Star Wars: Lando show
Donald will be working alongside his brother, Stephen Glover, and will be replacing Dear White People's Justin Simien.
News first broke of a Lando Calrissian limited series back in December 2020. Justin Simien was said to be at the helm of the project, but according to Variety, the role has been handed over to the Glover brothers. The deal is said to have taken place before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes began. Simien recently worked on Disney's Haunted Mansion.
The Glover brothers are no strangers to working alongside each other, having worked on Donald's comedy-drama series Atlanta, as well as his co-produced Amazon Prime psychological thriller, Swarm. They also co-wrote an animated adaptation of Deadpool, but that was axed in 2018.
John Landgraf, CEO of FX, said the decision was down to Marvel: "They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done the show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them, as did Donald and Stephen."
Originally played by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” Donald first stepped into the role of Lando in Ron Howard’s 2018 prequel movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story. In April he spoke to GQ about potentially returning to the role.
“I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious. The past couple of years, this pandemic shit, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much," he said. "I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with."
Earlier this year, Donald Glover revealed that he's making a short film with Malia Obama.
