Demi Lovato discusses re-adopting she/her pronouns
In May 2021, Demi Lovato announced that they identify as non-binary and would be using they/them pronouns going forward. Later, in 2022, they revealed that they were also comfortable using she/her pronouns.
In an interview with GQ Hype Spain, Lovato explains that it was easier to use she/they pronouns because they were fed up with people asking why identified with they/them pronouns.
"I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting. And that is one of the reasons that have led me to also feel comfortable with the feminine pronoun. I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word," she says.
Discussing the lack of neutral spaces for artists, Lovato says: "I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women's bathroom, even though I don't completely identify with it. I would feel more comfortable in a genderless bathroom. Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me. I see myself conditioned to choose a woman because there are no more.
In 2021, The singer told fans on social media that they had been “doing some healing and self-reflective work” in the past year that had ultimately led them to re-examining their gender identity.
“I want to take this moment to share something very personal with you,” they began. “Over the past year and a half I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work, and through this work I’ve had this revelation that I identify as non-binary.
“With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to ‘they/them’. I feel that this best represents the fluidity that I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and still am discovering.”
