Connie Constance releases rework of "Kamikaze" featuring Sleaford Mods' Jason Williamson
Following the release of her second album Miss Power in 2022, Connie Constance returns with a reworking of her feminist anthem "Kamikaze" which features Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson.
The original song was written immediately after Constance had come off stage from a show supporting Hak Baker. Alongside producers Karma Kid and Adam Kaye (Bondax), where they felt determined to catch the energy of the gig.
Speaking of the deeper meaning behind the song, Constance says: “It’s about the western beauty standard women are expected to uphold especially those in the media eye. And also the idea that we’re all meant to have it together all the time. It’s talking about Amy Winehouse and more recently Caroline Flack and how they were treated by the media instead of cared for in a time of need.”
No stranger to collaboration, most recently working with Dry Cleaning's Florence Shaw and Amyl and The Sniffers' Amy Taylor, Williamson explains that the idea of their collaboration was for him to lend his voice as an additional voice from her perspective, but it didn't feel right. "I felt it was disingenuous to present myself as someone with first-hand experience of the patriarchy," he says, noting that instead, he added a more authentic voice: "I came at it from the other angle: the male counter, the gatekeeper."
"Kamikaze” featuring Jason Williamson is out now. Connie Constance headlines two sold out shows this week at London’s The Lower Third, and announces a headline performance at Village Underground for 15 September. Tickets will go on sale this Thursday, 30 March via itsconniesworld.com.
