Coco return with new single, "Moodrings"
Coco – Maia Friedman (Dirty Projectors), Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo), and Dan Molad (Lucius) – have shared the brand new single, “Moodrings", as their first release of the year.
The accompanying video, directed by Hill, features actors that represent “Coco in 2060. May we be so lucky,” says the band. Each actor captures the essence of Coco and the sensuality of the song as they sway and play onstage.
“At Montrose Recording in Richmond, the engineer Adrian had an incredible modular synth rig, which we ran Maia’s vocal through to achieve the chopped up ‘femme-bot’ instrumental breaks,” says Oliver. “There was a bit of back and forth about whether to include the bridge, which we ultimately felt earned its place with a dramatic scene change into string-led Philly soul.”
Since the last release – 2021's self-titled album – life has flown wildly forward for the members of Coco – Hill getting married, Moland getting engaged, Friedman giving birth to her first child.
For their forthcoming album, 2, Coco gathered for periods of time in Richmond, Virgina, working with Adrian Olsen (Lucy Dacus, Fruit Bats, Bedouine) at Montrose Recording, and in Joshua Tree, California, self-producing in an informal desert setting. Each member a writer, player, and artist in their own right, Coco embraced a freedom in fluidity—swapping seats, instruments, and vocal parts however intuition compelled. "Moodrings" follows the previously released singles, "Do This Right" and "Mythological Man".
2, is set for release on 1 March via First City Artist, and is available to pre-order now.
