Chappell Roan on her meteoric rise: "Part of me hopes I never have a hit again because then no one will ever expect anything from me"
Chappell Roan recently graced the cover of Rolling Stone to discuss her rise to stardom, and the perils of becoming a celebrity overnight.
Chappell Roan has spoken out recently about adjusting to being thrust into the spotlight, and dealing with ever-growing expectations/demands from fans. Discussing experiences with stalkers, she was supported by Jewel and Hayley Williams of Paramore who have been through similar situations.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, she recounts a stalker who has visited her parents house and also turned up outside her hotel room in New York. She has been chastised for not wanting to take photographs with fans, or not wanting them to call her by her real name; has had people physically grab her, and even had a fan kiss her without consent. When she speaks out about how this is unacceptable behaviour, she's met with backlash.
Detailing how this affects her future career plans, she said: "Part of me hopes I never have a hit again because then no one will ever expect anything from me again".

Since speaking out about her struggles, she has been met with support from a plethora of other women in the industry. Sabrina Carpenter, who is also having a huge moment has reached out: “We’re both going through something so fucking hard … she just feels like everything is flying, and she’s just barely hanging on,” Roan says. “It was just good to know someone else feels that way.”
Charli XCX, Katy Perry, Lorde, MUNA, Miley Cyrus, Mitski and boygenius are all offering advice to Chappell Roan, but she's noticed there's less support from men in the industry. “Not a lot of boys have been like, ‘Let me know if you ever want to talk about it,’” she says. “It’s been sick to have artists that I’ve looked up to for many years, sometimes my whole life, reach out"; namely Orville Peck, Troye Sivan, Noah Kahan, and Elton John.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about Chappell Roan, John said: "“I am very protective of her. She is kind, innocent, and wonderful. She is not ‘Chappell Roan’ offstage – a bit like me. She is one of those people who I felt like I have known for a long time.”
Adele also recently gave advice to Chappell Roan: "do what you've gotta do baby girl, you're phenomenal".
