Brixton Academy's licence under review following Asake concert crowd crush
O2 Academy Brixton's licence is being reviewed after a crowd crush at Asake's concert last week resulted in two deaths.
Earlier this week 23-year-old Gabrielle Hutchinson, who was working as a security contractor at Asake concert last week, died in hospital, marking the second death after the O2 Academy Brixton incident following 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo. Another person remains in hospital in a critical condition.
According to a new notice outside the venue (shared by BBC), the venue's premises licence is under review following an application by the Metropolitan Police. The notice states that a senior Police officer thinks the venue is "associated with both serious crime, and serious disorder."
The Met Police said, "The summary review application will generate an interim steps hearing by the local authority, which will take place on Thursday [22 December]."
BBC reports that a statement on the Lambeth Council website read: "We are shocked and saddened by the devastating incident in Brixton on Thursday night, and are working to support our communities in the wake of this tragedy.
"The council is also fully playing its role in the investigations that are now under way. We are determined that answers must be found as to why these awful events occurred.
"The venue is currently closed and we are set to undertake an urgent, in-depth review of its licence, which covers the legal conditions it must meet to run, including its public safety arrangements."
Asake responded to the news of the crowd crush last week, writing, "My heart is with those who were injured last night and caused any form of discomfort." Over the weekend he shared a statement about Ikumelo's passing, and wrote that he is "overwhelmed with grief and could never have imagined anything like this happening."
