Brittany Howard explores the darker dimensions of love on "Red Flags"
Brittany Howard, the five-time Grammy Award-winning powerhouse has shared the second single lifted from her forthcoming new album, WHAT NOW.
On Red Flags, Howard offers up a reflection on love’s darker dimensions, echoing the stormy intensity of her emotional state. She says: “In my past relationships, I’ve had a tendency to see red flags as part of some parade just for me—something for me to run right through without paying any attention."
“To me "Red Flags" sounds very dystopian, which makes sense for a song that feels like end-of-times as far as me emotionally maturing. It’s like a big tower fell and now I have to create something new.”
The track was was written and produced by Howard with co-production from Shawn Everett (Kacey Musgraves, SZA), with whom she has a longstanding creative relationship since Alabama Shakes. Recording took place at the Sound Emporium and historic RCA Studio A in her hometown of Nashville.
WHAT NOW is the follow-up to Jaime, her 2019 solo debut which earned seven Grammy nominations in four different genres, winning the award for Best Rock Song with “Stay High.”
Earlier this month, Brittany Howard performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, performing “The Weight'' with Elton John, Sheryl Crow and Chris Stapleton, in honouring the life of Robbie Robertson.
She is set to arrive in the UK next summer to support Hozier in London, Dublin, Glasgow, and Chepstow.
WHAT NOW, is released on 2 February via Island Records/EMI, and is available to pre-order now.
