Britney Spears calls out media circus surrounding her memoir: "that’s exactly why I quit the business four years ago"
As Britney Spears gears up for the release of her debut memoir, The Woman in Me, several extracts have been shared online.
The Woman in Me is set to focus on the journey and strength "at the core of one of the greatest performers in pop music history,” according to a press release from Gallery Books. The memoir is said to put a spotlight on the “enduring power of music and love and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms.”
Last week, it was revealed that actress Michelle Williams will be narrating the audiobook. In a statement to PEOPLE, Spears said: "This book has been a labor of love and all the emotions that come with it. Reliving everything has been exciting, heart-wrenching, and emotional, to say the least. For those reasons, I will only be reading a small part of my audiobook.”
As excerpts regarding her relationship with Justin Timberlake, and her acting career, have been doing the rounds, Spears has posted a statement expressing her frustration with the way media are spinning the stories she has shared.

“My book’s purpose was not to offend anyone by any means! That was me then… that is in the past! I don’t like the headlines I am reading… that’s exactly why I quit the business four years ago!” Spears wrote. “Most of the book is from 20 years ago… I have moved on and it’s a beautiful clean slate from here! I am here to establish it that way for the rest of my entire life! Either way, that is the last of it and shit happens!”
The press have particularly been particularly focused on Spears' revelation that she had an abortion whilst dating Justin Timberlake, as well as her recalling the "two-week brawl" that she had with Colin Farrell following their split – "Brawl is the only word for it — we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight", she reveals in the memoir – but Spears is adament that
Spears continued, “This is actually a book I didn’t know needed to be written… although some might be offended, it has given me closure on all things for a better future! Hopefully I can enlighten people who feel particularly alone in most cases or hurt or misunderstood! Again, my motive for this book was not to harp on my past experiences, which is what the press is doing and it’s dumb and silly! I have moved on since then!”
The Woman in Me is set for release on 24 October, and is available to pre-order.
