Boygenius share their early tactics to get themselves booked for shows
In a recent Boygenius interview with Nardwuar, Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, and Julien Baker reveal the tricks that they used in order to get booked for shows, early on in their careers.
Boygenius recently met up with Nardwuar at Neptune Records on Main Street – Vancouver's oldest record store – to discuss the songs on their debut album, and what it was like when they first met each other.
Later in the conversation, they reflected on the beginning phases of their careers, and the lengths they would go to in order to be booked for a show.
"I participated in the scam of self-promotion and I paid money... There was a pop blog where all the Balance and Composure people would learn about Dayfresh and Superheaven and I paid to get us a pop-up ad for our band when our single came out," Baker reveals. "This was also me trying to book house shows in the summer, emailing people: 'To whom it may concern', and it was this guy named Roach [putting on] a house show and I would attach press links."
Bridgers admits that she "let [her] 18-year-old manager buy Facebook fans" for her, which led to Dacus confessing that she actually pretended to be her own manager emailing about opportunities to play shows. "I'm emailing on behalf of Lucy Dacus – she would like to play your living room," she paraphrased, revealing that the tactic actually worked for her, despite not having any music out.
Boygenius have come a long way since those days, having recently released their debut album, the record, which coincided with a short film directed by Kristen Stewart. As well as featuring on Barack Obama's infamous summer playlist, they've supported Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour, and are also in the midst of their debut headline tour.
Boygenius are set to play Gunnersbury Park on 20 August. Tickets are on sale now.
