Bob Nastanovich shares two unreleased poems by late Silver Jews bandmate David Berman
Silver Jews' Bob Nastanovich has allowed two previously unpublished David Berman poems to be made public as part of a new collection about Berman's art.
David Berman died in August 2019, and only published one poetry book titled Actual Air (1999) while he was alive. A few days after Berman's passing Jagjaguwar shared an unreleased "story/poem" he wrote in 2016, and this week his Silver Jews bandmate Bob Nastanovich has contributed two unpublished Berman poems from Nastanovich's personal collection to a new Post45 collection about Berman's art.
The two poems by Berman are titled My Trial Was In June and The Calm Reflectors.
Nastanovich also contributed an essay to the collection, where he wrote, "David Berman is the only poet I've ever known. He didn't call himself one. He didn't dabble in poetry. He didn't try to impress people with his poetry. When I met him at the age of 18, I had known people who attempted poetry. They tried to sit down and write poems. I tried in English class a few times. I didn't know what I was doing and felt ambivalent about my mediocre work. I had little appreciation of poetry. David changed that."
