Baby Dave links up with Kate Nash on "Telephobia"
Baby Dave - AKA SOFT PLAY's Isaac Holman – shares new single and video for "Telephobia" featuring Kate Nash.
Baby Dave links up with Kate Nash for his new single and video "Telephobia" which is the first cut from a new forthcoming album Different Gravy.
Earlier this year, Holman signalled that he would continue to release as Baby Dave with the surprise drop of "Sounds Good". Different Gravy is set to arrive as the second album from Isaac Holman’s solo alias, it follows on from last year’s debut, Monkey Brain, which featured instrumental and production contributions from Damon Albarn.
""Telephobia" is all about finding it hard to keep in contact with your mates, particularly when there’s shit going on in your life, whether it be mental health struggles or real life drama. I knew I wanted Kate on the tune but I wasn’t sure how to go about it, it felt like a long shot. I gave her a cheeky follow to try and make contact and then lo and behold she messaged me saying she was into my stuff and that she also has OCD," Holman reveals. "It felt like we had a nice connection and after chatting for a while I said if you ever wanna make any music together, I’m down. Thankfully she was up for it and a couple weeks later she came and hung out and did her thing. I’ve got a lot of respect for her as an artist and a person and I’m just so happy it all came together.”
“I’m a big fan of Isaac’s music and we became quick mates over the past year talking about our OCD brains and the quirks of living life as a musician. He asked if I wanted to sing on a new haunting and catchy tune and I jumped at the chance," Nash says. "I love Isaac’s music because it feels familiar, it paints a scene that you instantly recognise, it’s got a cinematic quality to it and it’s uniquely British. His lyrics always make me laugh and nod in agreement and even this sad tune helps make you feel just that little bit more understood & less lonely when you hear it.”
For Different Gravy, Holman headed to his local recording studio - Forum in Tunbridge Wells - linking up his friend Erik Miles, a talented rising 20 year old producer, who worked closely with Holman across the tracks. As he says, “his input was massive and I feel like this record is his as much as it is mine.”
Holman has come to recognise that his creations as Baby Dave have become a necessary ingredient for his mental wellbeing; “Making this record over the last year has both kept me sane and made me feel more mental than ever. I’ve come to realise that I now need to make these tunes. It’s like therapy for me. It’s catharsis. It’s personal. Say what you see. That’s the point in this project. It’s about every day shit, as mundane as it often is. But even in the uneventful days, little things happen, and they’re the things I like to write about.”
"Telephobia" is out now. Baby Dave's second album, Different Gravy, will arrive on 11 August and is available to pre-save.
