Angie McMahon unveils the brand new single, "Exploding"
Melbourne-based singer and musician Angie McMahon shares new single "Exploding" – a life-affirming eruption from her forthcoming album Light, Dark, Light Again.
"This song is a promise that I’ll allow myself to erupt sometimes, to physically release my emotions, be a wild and dramatic animal, rather than always trying to keep my big feelings repressed and hidden. We need to acknowledge what we’re feeling and express it," says McMahon.
"I wanted the song to sound as big as flying through the galaxy, to be a space to fall apart into. It’s not always clear where we’re supposed to fall apart, but I just know it’s important that we do. It was born out of a song prompt from Ruby Gill: ‘Approach something new with an animal body and an open mind and see where it takes you…you could zoom out really far and go to space’.”
The "Exploding" video, co-directed, filmed and edited by Bridgette Winten, shows vignettes of Angie against a backdrop of strikingly celestial light projections, playing with sparklers on the beach, and running through neighbourhood streets.
Light, Dark, Light Again was recorded slowly and purposefully across a year between Angie’s home city of Naarm/Melbourne with Alex O'Gorman and Bonnie Knight, and the North Carolina town of Durham. In the latter – where the majority of the album’s tracks came together – she worked alongside esteemed Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, Snail Mail). Completing the studio band was Bon Iver drummer Matt McCaughan, Canadian singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk and Megafaun musician Phil Cook.
Light, Dark, Light Again features previous singles, "Saturn Returning" and "Letting Go" and "Fireball Whiskey".
"Exploding" is out now. Light, Dark, Light Again is due for release on 27 October via AWAL Recordings, and is available to pre-order now.
