Watch The Anchoress cover All About Eve for Best Fit's secret sessions at End of the Road
Just ahead of her main set at End of the Road Festival back in September, The Anchoress played a Best Fit secret session and tackled folk-goth classic "Martha's Harbour" by All About Eve.
The 1988 ballad - which appeared on the band's self-titled debut record - originally broke the UK top ten and features the haunting vocals of Julianne Regan. The song also appears on the new Anchoress record Versions, which contains modern reworkings of ten songs by the likes of Depeche Mode, The Cure, Nirvana, Nico and Halsey, all produced and mixed by Davies.
"'Martha's Harbour' is a song that is deeply embedded in some of my earliest memories," Davies explains, "and responsible for my long-held conviction that I have alway been drawn to sad songs, even as a small child. I was very happy to have Julianne Regan reach out to give it her seal of approval after hearing the version I recorded. Quite the compliment when you’ve toyed with someone’s composition!"
Davies joined the likes of Angel Olsen, Samia, Future Islands, Kara Jackson and Caitlin Rose who all played for Best Fit's Secret Sessions this year. The sessions have become a key part of End of the Road, bringing together artists from across the line-up in a series of short sets, exclusive covers, collaborations, and live interviews and Q&As.
Over 100 artists have taken part in the secret sessions to date, included Lucy Dacus, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Kurt Vile, Moses Sumney, Alex Cameron, Laura Marling, Patti Smith, and Frightened Rabbit - who played a now iconic version of "The Modern Leper".
