Alex Ross Perry's recent Pavement musical is part of a bigger film project
It's been revealed that Alex Ross Perry's recent Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical is part of a larger film project about the band that's in the works.
At the start of the month there were two Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical performances in NYC. The musical is written and directed by Alex Ross Perry, who also directed Pavement's "Harness Your Hopes" video starring Sophie Thatcher in March, and now it's been revealed that the musical is part of a bigger film project about the legendary group.
According to The New Yorker, the upcoming Pavement film is a "screwball movie" that will feature footage from the musical, the Pavement museum exhibition, and has elements of a biopic and a tour documentary.
The piece reveals that Pavement wanted a film, but instead of hiring a filmmaker, Stephen Malkmus wanted to work with a screenwriter. Malkmus also didn't want a screenplay, and Perry said, "No one knew what that meant."
Perry described the project as "Legitimate, ridiculous, real, fake, idiotic, cliché, illogical. You take the Todd Haynes Bob Dylan movie, the Scorsese documentary, the Pennebaker documentary, and the movie Dylan himself directed that everyone hates [Renaldo and Clara] and put them all in a blender."
Alex Ross Perry is yet to share a release date or title for the upcoming Pavement film.
