A collaboration with André 3000 and SAULT is in the works
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 6, Andre 3000 recalls getting into the studio with SAULT back in 2019 when they'd only released two studio albums.
During the interview with Gilles Peterson on 23 December, André 3000 discussed his debut solo album, New Blue Sun. Prior to this, André 3000's last release was Outkast’s album Idlewild, which was released in 2006 as the follow-up to their Grammy-winning double album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
New Blue Sun features André heavily on his instrument of choice – the flute, and was born out of jams André 3000 with the percussionist Carlos Niño. He worked mostly with keyboardist Surya Botofasina, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Nate Mercereau, and other instrumentalists on New Blue Sun include Deantoni Parks, Diego Gaeta, Matthewdavid, V.C.R, Diego Gaeta, Jesse Peterson, and Mia Doi Todd.
Speaking to Peterson, André Lauren Benjamin – AKA André 3000 – revealed that he had previously worked with SAULT back when they released their first two studio albums, 5 and 7.
"A musician friend turned me onto them when they were kind of in their secrecy stage. So he connected me with them, and we hung out, went to the studio, and messed around a bit. Once I was turned onto them, I listened to what was done before – I think they had one or two albums out at that time," he explained. When Peterson asked whether they'd made any recordings, André revealed that "we can look forward to it in the future," as they've discussed him going back into the studio with them to record, as they're "hoping to do something a bit more substantial, soon".
SAULT recently performed their debut live show in London. André 3000's debut studio album, New Blue Sun is out now.
