Lion Babe is back in the studio. As it was Tweeted so, we can only hope, it is. And at long last: The Brooklyn duo – one half of which is the producer Astro Raw and the other the daughter of Vanessa Williams – teased fans for a solid year since releasing ‘Treat Me Like Fire’ in late 2012.
The track, which is all kinds of smooth of RnB and deep 70s soul, is sure to whet the appetite of anyone remotely interested in the 2013 reconstruction of Motown on the rock steady foundations of modern production.
With Lion Babe, Hervey provides rich vocals – not to mention an outright wild visual accompaniment, channeling her inner lion with hair we will blissfully continue to choose to believe is real – and Goodman has crafted a snappy beat that manages to feel fresh with its eclectic influences (in addition to the obvious: 90s hiphop, funk) and the retro echos never feel tired.
Rough YouTube cuts of live tracks are available with some digging, but for the most part ‘Treat Me Like Fire’ has been the sole source for a quickly cultivated fan base enraptured with the tune and the duo’s alluring aesthetic. Again, that hair. And so it’s speaks to the quality of this one song that all this positivity has caught on so fast. Like fire, if you will.
