Denver-born Gabriel Jorgensen possesses the type of incessantly whirring mind which lends itself well to making the whimsical, romantic folk we’ve heard from his Ancient Mariner project so far. Early cut, ‘In Solitude’, recalls Sufjan Stevens’ tender worldliness with flickers of Radiohead’s muted beats and a hint of St. Vincent’s swooning, orchestral arrangements all adjoined like a shimmery constellation visible through a murk of reverb.
Gabriel describes his writing process as ‘impatient’, and yet his music sounds like it has been painstakingly crafted, pored over and re-worked for eons. Looped vocals, trilling guitars and flitting pianos are carefully grafted atop one another with peerless attention to detail.
His adventurous streak led him to a cabin deep in The Rockies where he laid down the Child Of Wrath EP, to be self-released on 2 July. Featuring the aforementioned breakthrough track, ‘In Solitude’ and recent teaser, ‘Child Of Wrath’, the record will hopefully indicate whether Ancient Mariner has the composure and stability to flourish beyond such delicately channelled ditties. For now we’re basking contentedly in the isolated beauty of these very intimate, multi-layered works.
