Fashion enthusiasts might already recognise the name Zebra Katz, his track ‘Ima Read’ having become an anthem of Paris Fashion Week.
The forthcoming ‘W8WTF’ is instantly identifiable as the work of the same artist, trading as it does in the same painfully minimalistic percussion and deep, heavily opiated vocals. But where ‘Ima Read’ feels rather like a novelty track, ‘W8WTF’ is utterly gripping. Like the accompaniment to the briefest moment of clarity in the middle of a night of excessive suburban motel drug ingestion, it is almost unremittingly bleak – and yet the sheer warmth of the vocal, oppressively thick as it is, somehow seems gloriously reassuring.
You can stream clips of the absurdly titled Winter Titty EP here. The record is out March 26 on Senseless. Zebra Katz plays the SXSW Scion party on Saturday.
