Listen: Highlands – Hearts
Iceland’s forays into the more centre-than-left side of pop are a rare and beautiful thing which is why the debut track from Reykjavik duo Highlands stands out a like a giant glacial banger.
“Hearts” is the creation of Reykjavik-born Logi Pedro Stefansson and Karin Sveinsdottir. Stefansson also plays bass for Icelandic pop collective Retro Stefson and met Sveinsdottir as a judge on a high school singing contact.
Ostensibly a pop song of humble construction, “Hearts” has enough edge in the ephemeral snapshots of a one night stand. “I hope they’ll never know/How low our hearts can go”, sings Sveinsdottir in perfectly vulnerable clarity. It’s charming stuff and we’re promised a mixtape from the talented pair next month.
