Annie Clark is well on her way to becoming an Actual Real Life Celebrity. As St Vincent she is currently sitting at number 19 in the US charts – and now she is trying her hand at composing for other people.
yMusic, a six-piece ensemble based in the States, perform with and for various members of the indie glitterati. Their forthcoming Beautiful Mechanical LP consists of compositions from the likes of Son Lux, My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden, and Clark herself.
‘Proven Badlands’ avoids the predictable trap of pop-song-but-with-orchestra, instead demonstrating a firm grasp on the tenets of classical composition – but with the beautiful melodic sensibilities so evident in Clark’s work as St Vincent. It is tightly wound, economical, and fantastically catchy.
Beautiful Mechanical is out 27 September on New Amsterdam.
