Madlib must be the busiest artist in the Stones Throw stable. In the last year alone he has released a collaborative EP with Freddie Gibbs, turned in production work for Georgia Anne Muldrow, begun work on the new Talib Kweli record, and completed his ambitious Madlib Medicine Show project.
Today, though, we are delving deeper into California artist’s back catalogue thanks to Stones Throw’s reissue of 2003′s Suite For Weldon, a Madlib-produced jazz project. The three-track release, which also features Breakestra and Mr Dibbs, was recorded in tribute to pianist Weldon Irvine – “the first of the ‘jazz elders’ to validate Madlib’s take on jazz”, according to the label. The title track is a 10-minute piece that roams freely between swung, breakbeaty thrust and Hammond-heavy, smoke-filled groove.
