Following on from the bouncy "Cruel Dusk" released in February, North London's latest talent Wyldest return with a more reflective piece, "Danish Longball". Aided by the glinting production of Guy Fixsen (Slowdive, Pixies) the track is somewhat more melancholic than the last single, set behind a delightful backdrop of washy synths and echos.
Playing on the Scandinavian game of bat and ball, singer Zoe Mead focuses everyone out but one: "there’s nowhere else I would go to / it’s everything I should belong to / just you". Indeed, speaking of the track, Mead admits it "is about an unlikely Scandinavian love affair; listeners can groove or simply reflect on the sadness of the lyrics". With its paced tempo and calm instrumentation, the song certainly lends itself more to the latter than the former, although the addition of live percussion over the electronic samples does add an interesting rhythmic glare.
"Danish Longball" is further evidence of Wyldest's emerging presence in 2015. The trio headline Dalston Victoria on 6 May. Tickets available here.
