The world seems to have lost interest in mash-ups, and rightfully so. Most of the time they seem to consist of little more than an ‘ironic’ pop vocal slapped onto the instrumental of whatever happens to be the coolest track in indie clubs at the time.
How refreshing, then, to find a project that is more reworking than mash-up, and that actually yields some interesting results. A few months back, a graphic designer called Logan Walters decided, apropos nothing, to rework Wu-Tang album covers as if they had been released by legendary jazz label Blue Note. In response, Atlantan DJ 2-Tone Jones has made a record of Wu-Tang vocals over classic Blue Note instrumentals. The project is interesting not just because it sounds great, but because it illustrates the importance of both jazz and appropriation in hip-hop.
‘Astral C.R.E.A.M.’ is based around a track by jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, and it’s the first track from a full remix album that will apparently materialise some time this year.
No, I didn’t think I’d be posting a Wu-Tang track as a Song Of The Day either. NSFW language, obviously.
