Old school hip hop and dreamy art pop collide on Winston Surfshirt’s “Same Same”
The 6-piece band from Australia get seriously wavy on their latest offering “Same Same” taken from upcoming album Sponge Cake.
Over the past several years Winston Surfshirt have been grinding away in Sydney's underground scene grappling with genres ranging from indie pop to funk to hip hop. On “Same Same” catchy choruses and jazzy interludes give way to driving synth breaks all topped off with Winston’s peculiar vocal tone. This is a collective who ultimately, have mastered a range of individual genres and have the subsequently begun to collate them in the weirdest of ways, creating a sound not too distant from Carlton Banks fronting Tame Impala.

Speaking on the track Winston explains: ''This was one of the last songs written for Sponge Cake, It started in a different pitch and was much slower, I think through almost playing it live a couple days after it was written for about a year helped to form it into the party that it is now. We called in some extra brass and percussion which really helped create it into the song you're hearing today.''
