Whitney unveil enchantingly wistful new track “No Woman”
Secretly Canadian and LA label Lead Riders have teamed-up to reveal an enchantingly wistful outing from Whitney, aligning the effortless and assured newcomers with the leading lights of indie.
The Chicago/Portland duo - composed of former Unknown Mortal Orchestra drummer Julien Ehrlich and ex-Smith Westerns guitarist Max Kakacek - echo Neil Young with a sun-hazed, coastal-America, travelling raconteur atmosphere that pines and aches beautifully.
Ehrlich’s throaty falsetto brings the woozy melancholy, while velveteen brass and heartfelt strings add colour, depth and joyful hope to proceedings.”I've been going through a change / I might never be sure / I'm just walking in a haze / I'm not ready to turn,” he calls, bringing to mind the likes of indie-folk favourites Fleet Foxes and Midlake.
Speaking about the track, the drummer/vocalist says: "'No Woman" started to take shape when I woke up on a friend’s floor one morning. He was taking a shower and the chorus popped into my head while I was grabbing my stuff to go home. Later on Max and I sat down and wrote the chords and song structure in our apartment. It’s about losing the love of your life and being thrown into an aimless journey because of it.”
The gently crunching, noodling guitar work from Kakacek plays soulfully with its accompanying backing bed and confirms Whitney as sure-fire project for 2016. Secretly Canadian strike gold once again. See tour dates below.
