Weakened Friends are about to become your new favourite band
Every now and then, a band comes along and stands out from everything else, hits you square between the eyes and makes you pay attention. Weakened Friends are that band.
"Now I get fucked up all alone / And think of you without your clothes on." When lead vocalist Sonia Sturino practically growls this cutting line that sits at the centre of "Honestly", uttering each word through her immediately distinctive rasping vocals, you just know that this is a band that you want to hear more of.
Clocking in at just under two minutes, "Honestly" is a perfectly succinct introduction to the Portland-based band. Full of brash guitars and powerful drums, their songs are about honesty and self-awareness, as Sturino says in her own words "Sometimes, you’re having a shitty day. It can be hard, and that’s beautiful in its own way... This is less about getting rid of that feeling and finding those things causing the feeling and dealing with them."
The band first formed back in 2014, and have since honed their distinct sound that incorporates pop-inspired vocal hooks, self-deprecating humour and a ferociously exciting energy. They made their SXSW debut last year, and have played gigs alongside the likes of CHVRCHES and Silversun Pickups, and it's obvious from the music that's already out that this is truly only the beginning for the trio.
We're likely going to be seeing a lot more of this lot in 2018, and - honestly - we can't wait.
