Stones Throw supergroup The Stepkids‘ debut album is an enjoyable, if frustrating affair. It’s chock full of pretty little melodic ideas, but it’s so damn floaty it often seems impossible to actually hold onto.
This remix of ‘Suburban Dream’ is a perfect illustration of what that record could have been, if only it had been infused with slightly more hip-hop testosterone. Given a delightfully brazen boom-bap rhythm section, and used as a bed for two of contemporary hip-hop’s most unashamedly erudite rappers, the track takes on an entirely new life.
