Speedy Wunderground troupe The Lounge Society speak for nihilistic youth in “Generation Game”
The latest single to be released by cult label Speedy Wunderground, young Yorkshire troupe The Lounge Society share their political debut single “Generation Game”.
As starts go, getting your music released by a lauded cult record label is a fine one, and one that The Lounge Society are getting used to. Pitched to Speedy Wunderground by their (clearly quite great) manager, the label founders Dan Carey and Pierre Hall were quickly in unison about getting them onboard.
“I don’t think it’s sunk in yet that we’re releasing a single with Speedy," share the Yorkshire-based band. "It’s always been a dream for all of us to record with Dan Carey and release with Speedy. We love their ethos and all the music they’ve put out in the past, it’s a great scene.”
The single in question is “Generation Game”, a number that - despite the cliche - really is far wiser than the band’s years: at a mere 16-17 years old and still in school, the band needed adult assistance to make the recording session with Carey and co, a process that sounds like the stuff of indie artist dreams.
“On the day everything happened really quickly,” the band continue. “We messed around for a bit, trying different amps, guitars and stuff, then when we were ready Dan said ‘shall we go for a take’ and switched the lights off, put the smoke machine on and put lasers on. Then just as we started playing the smoke alarm went off which was really funny, apparently it’s never done that before! We went through the track and there was a real energy in the room, it was like being at a gig which is exactly what this track needed.”
With an undone and unruly vibe, “Generation Game” is a perfect intro to what the band are about. Clocking in at five-and-a-half minutes, each moment feels vital. Gathering a rattle-stop momentum and decorated with psychedelic whorls, the track sparks thoughts of Parquet Courts or rising Brits Squid and FEET amidst the brattish-yet-nihilistic barks of vocalist and guitarist Cameron Davey.
“‘Generation Game’ means a lot to all of us, and we feel it’s an ideal introduction to us as a band,” The Lounge Society share of their debut single. “To us the lyrics reflect what we’re all about – shedding light on topics and events we feel are criminally ignored - and for it to be our very first offering to the world (especially through Speedy) really helps get that across. Once we’d finished the take we all stopped dead and looked at each other (and Dan) and he just said ‘that’s it, that’s the one’. I think we were all a bit shocked but the energy was there on the recording and we completely trusted him!”
