Listen: TĀLĀ x How To Dress Well - "The One" [TĀLĀ's version]
It was only a matter of time before the blogosphere's golden girl TĀLĀ gave a new home to her reams of vocal samples and wonderful ideas. The Londoner simply hoards too many to keep them all to herself. Enlisting Tom Krell aka American doom-crooner How To Dress Well to collaborate with her over a 24-hour writing session though? We didn't see that coming, and we couldn't have asked for more.
The result of the pair knocking skulls together over such an intense period can certainly be heard in the music. Keys jab loosely over distant Arabic fades at the beginning of "The One", with Krell's vocals entering in an abrupt collision of trap beats and pitchy synths. Samples dance wildly atop the track's propulsive foundations with thug-like hefts pulling at the roots. TĀLĀ also lends her cushioned RnB vocal to the mix, joining Krell on a chorus that should sound like a cacophony but only pleases in sweet concordance.
By no means is this quick blast of ideas perfectly honed but it's damn impressive. We're just glad to see such an inspiring collaboration come to fruition.
