Watch: SZA feat. Isaiah Rashad – “Warm Winds”
“Warm Winds,” the lastest single from neo soul singer-songwriter and Top Dawg Entertainment signee, SZA, is ideally titled; an airy, lived-in three minutes of sun-dappled RnB.
-SZA’s gorgeous, breathy alto weaves a pastel ribbon through the song’s gauzy, blissed-out boom-bap, a crisply organic soundscape dotted with far-off echoes of keyboards and source-less symphonic noises that hang in the ether like points of dust in a sunbeam. SZA’s lyrics match that hazy impressionism, lines like, “I recall your soul and it tastes like gardens, flowers, warm winds”, offering pointillist, springtime details, a loose narrative of nostalgia that sounds written for April – let alone picked out as an equinox single.
Fellow Top Dawg roster member Isaiah Rashad (fresh off his excellent label debut, Cilvia Demo) offers an echoing undercurrent, doubling SZA’s melodies with his own reedy tenor. The whole thing feels wonderfully atmospheric, the sort of mood-piece you’d want filling the air as soon as the days start to get longer.
Watch the video for “Warm Winds” above, which is more than fitting with the song’s spring air.
