Strong Asian Mothers are charmingly "Out of Love" on the second single from their forthcoming debut
Fresh off its radio premiere with Huw Stephens last night, London trio Strong Asian Mothers share "Out of Love", the second single from debut EP The Lynx Africa.
"Out Of Love" sounds like the internet come to life; it's as though longtime friends Kalim Patel, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Josh Stadlen have scoured YouTube and Soundcloud without regard for genre, handpicking bits and pieces of hip-hop, electronic, R&B, and the buzziest indie singles of the last decade, digesting and distilling them fully before placing them all under the same roof.
In less capable hands, that approach might feel youthfully frantic and disorganised; the aural equivalent of clicking link after link every thirty seconds before finding yourself in the bowels of the web.
And though Strong Asian Mothers have quite gracefully combined a booming bottom end with fluttering synthesised horns and electronic accents, there's a certain sense of adolescence still present in its nimble hip-hop-biting verses and accomplished R&B-esque chorus (there must be some reason they've named their debut after a scent synonymous with teenage boys, after all).
Despite the somewhat defeated, world-weary lyrical stance—“maybe I’m just cynical” Patel croons in the leadup to the song’s final explosive chorus—Strong Asian Mothers seem well aware of their own limitless possibilities, even as a relationship comes to an end. The world is at their fingertips, just a click of the play button away.
The band has this to say: "This song is inspired by the burst of energy that sometimes happens when a relationship ends, and the new found freedom that can come with that.
"It's also tinged with doubts about whether it was the right thing to do, or whether you've lost something that you won't find again, but mixed in with a sense of excitement about the next chapter."
Check out the song below and make sure to catch the band this summer at The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, and Bestival.
