Strange Boy rope in the help of JFDR on weird and wonderful new track "Suburbia"
With "Suburbia", London duo Strange Boy prove once again that they are the absolute masters of piecing together surreal patchworks of sounds into something that is both delighfully obscure and endlessly interesting.
Listening to Strange Boy is like hearing the minds of the two artists in action, where they take pieces of different musical puzzles and force them into the same shape. The art form comes in how they create a completely different beast out of the contradicting ideas that they utilise.
In "Suburbia" they take choral-like chants that whisper and wind around and then underpin them with a trance-like beat. By no means should this work, but it does, creating a paranoid, trippy and surreal soundscape that you simply get lost in. JFDR's input only adds to the weird beauty of the whole track adding an extra voice that builds the intensity of the unsettling feeling that belies the track.
On one level, this is a beautifully strange song that brings to mind images of a dark suburbia at dusk, but if you delve a little further, there are many sinister layers to this, and it is another example of Strange Boy's knack for creating multi-faceted experiments of sound and emotion.
