Spill Tab links with JAWNY for a frantic blast of "Grade A" alt-pop
On the heels of her previous single “Indecisive”, Spill Tab continues her wave of sharp collaborations with “Grade A”.
LA-via-Bangkok artist Spill Tab – the moniker of Claire Chicha - has crafted a unique alt-pop sound, without taking itself too seriously. Since releasing her debut EP Oatmilk in late 2020, she’s established herself as a defined bilingual lyricist with a flair for pop-culture references and a homespun production style.
Working with producer and long-time friend marinelli, spill tab continues her trajectory of forward-facing pop on “Grade A”. The rousing track sees the LA songwriter link with JAWNY to deliver a single that moves at full speed. High-octane and idiosyncratic, Claire sings “I’ll never be your grade A chase / With the perfect face like some perfect prey” in her soft-spoken vocal before being wrapped around a heavy drum and bass indebted beat.
Building an impressive list of collaborators in the run-up to spill tab’s second EP, due to arrive later this year, West Coast artist JAWNY arrives on “Grade A” with all the boldness, wordplay, and deadpan humour expected from his brand of rap.
The frenetic energy of “Grade A” can also be found in its accompanying parkour-style video, which sees the duo eating cereal while doing handbrake turns in an empty parking lot, backflipping on a trampoline, and skateboarding on a half-pipe.
Speaking on the collaboration, spill tab shares “This track really came together over the course of several months, I started it with Spencer over a Zoom session we had where we laid down the drums, bass and vocals. It made its way to JAWNY's camp and he ended up wanting to hop on which was absolutely unreal for me 'cause I'd been a huge fan for a while.”
“He gave this song a whole new life and energy and his verse goes so crazy, and Marinelli brought everything together while we were finishing it up. It was also an insanely fun video to shoot, everything from A to Z has been such a dream with this tune.”
JAWNY continues, “I haven’t accepted a request to do a feature in over two years now because I can't write to a song/instrumental unless I love it which makes me picky even when I don’t want to be.”
“This song hit me just right from the first moment I heard it. The rest followed. Claire is an extremely talented songwriter, producer and vocalist and I’m happy this song brought us closer together as homies after having to sit inside for a year not crossing paths with each other. Run this sh*t up."
