Southern Shores – Night Is Young // Song Of The Day #276
When a piece of music emerges that can make you ignore the mundanity of the British weather (oh, and its cringe-making small talk partner) and make you feel like a child ready for summer whatever the season, then it should first, in some fashion, be personified and then held with arms empowered by unnatural, comical force. In fact the closest to that sort of childish analogy that can be given to the new Southern Shores EP on Cascine, Atlantic, and more specifically our Song of The Day ‘Night Is Young’, is that of an intricately built pinata being beaten of its sweet, diabetes-inducing goodness.
It retains that oh-so-charming hark back to the subconscious of early nineties dance whilst weaving in with an affable, insatiable 80s pop nonchalance – something that their label are quickly become known for. It’s Kylie Minogue playing with heartstrings like she used to. It’s, weirdly enough, a school disco worth remembering. It’s a Commodore-64 found in an attic and played with post-spliff. But without going even further into aimless retro-futuristism for the sake of effect, it’s awesome. (Oh – and it will actually move clouds.)
