SOTD #88 // Tame Impala: 'Solitude Is Bliss (Mickey Moonlight remix)'
If you’re claiming that you’re sound is influenced by John Lennon, Mamas and Papas, Beck, The Doors, Wu Tang Clan and Beach House, you’ve got to have some confidence. Then again, Australians aren’t really known to be a country of shrinking violets, and three men from Perth are hardly likely to let such legendary and influential names weigh them down.
Kevin Parker, Dominic Simper and Jay Watson are the trio that makes up the exquisitely named Tame Impala. With two EPs released, their full length has been almost two years in the making, but it looks set to be worth it. Their official website brands them as ‘psychedelic hypno-groove’, which grazes aspects of their sound without really encapsulating it. The truth is that the group’s noise isn’t one that really lends itself to the coin-a-phrase culture of modern music, with the swirling soundscapes, the build up and release of tension and energy whilst simultaneously playing within and altering existing genres. For all the bland rock that their country has been responsible for over the years, these three consistently make up for it with their tuneful, almost bluesy take on expansive, experimental rock.
Their debut album InnerSpeaker is due out in the UK later in the year. This first single from the record, ‘Solitude is Bliss’, has been getting remixers from around the globe overly excited, and this track is Mickey Moonlight’s dreamy, brittle reimagining of the track.
