The first time I saw Suckers live the lead singer had completely swaddled himself in a multicolored, intricately-woven blanket that bore the face of a feral feline. As that cats rabid eyes seemed to stare at me, it all made sense: the pop-meets-psychedelia sound that infuses their debut Wild Smile (on Frenchkiss Records) is more than just a musical subcategory, it’s who they are.
Sometimes their music is playful and sweet, other moments it’s wacky and scatterbrained — but every time it is oddly sincere and naturally raw, all gimmicks aside. All things go after the gloves come off. Yep, this New York City-based band is crazy and they know it.
Take this song, ‘Black Sheep’, their first single off the album. It starts off with smooth, yet shimmery beats and a catchy little verse, which eventually leads into a chorus that’s one part piercing yelps and another part wild coos. It’s easy to start singing along like any normal person, but once you hit the bridge, “Set it on fire and burn it away! Set it on fire and burn it away!” you will have let go of a little bit of yourself. And it will feel real good.
