I’m not sure if Herzog will take kindly to this, but these guys are going to head up the the Slacker Revolution. There’s lots of nods and winks towards Pavement here, their quirky and off kilter riffs but without the yelping Malkmus vocals. The playfulness of the track, its dueality as it shifts halfway through, brings to mind Jim O’Rourke’s pop meanderings.
‘Living Alone’ feels laid back, though not quite horizontal. There’s a lazy squirm to the chugging riffs and rhythms. The squeaky guitar riff betrays them though – there’s some technical wizardry going on there… it slides back and forth, like a xylophone running across your brain. This is also the only song I’ve heard to name-check Charlie Kaufman – Herzog are a post-modern kind of band – the song creaks and cracks with different ideas and musical threads. If you need one track to open up your Summer mixtape, this is it.
