Our series of SXSW-themed Songs Of The Day continues today. Not in Austin? Join us instead as we trawl through the extraordinary amount of dross in the official Soundcloud group in an effort to find something good.
Alberta four-piece Braids seem likely to enjoy some of the most-hyped showcases of this year’s SXSW. The Alberta four-piece have their debut out this month on Kanine Records – the label that has given us Grizzly Bear, Chairlift and, ahem, The Rumblestrips.
Theirs is a sound that slowly envelops you; it is curious, intriguing, rather than immediate. The foundations of ‘Lemonade’ are built with delicate guitar lines and sparse percussion, only for Reich-ian voice-as-instrument backing vocals to appear. Then, just as you think you have the measure of the track, it opens up yet again.
Braids head off on tour with Toro y Moi immediately after SXSW. Londoners can see them play their own show at the Lexington on 24 May.
