Berlin has long been one of Europe’s major cultural centres. Its thriving music scene, one of the most important in the world, has birthed many of the most influential artists and genres of the last century.
Today, Berlin is perhaps most closely associated with electronic music. The city has the best clubs on earth. But it is also home to a gradually expanding coterie of artists who are exploring modern composition and the outer reaches of classical music.
Nils Frahm and Anne Muller find themselves near the centre of that group. Frahm’s previous releases were solo piano works, sometimes improvised and always gripping. Now, in a new collaboration with cellist Müller, he has turned his attention to the electronic. Together they have crafted 7fingers, an album that sees headphone electronica, modern classical, and soundtrack music all converge to beautiful, intelligent, often terrifying effect.
