SOTD #207 // [mpFree Premier] Thousands: 'Mtses III'

The spare sounds of ‘Mtses III,’ today’s Song Of The Day from Seattle duo Thousands, seemingly comes floating to the listener across a fog covered lake, with the atmospheric sounds of waves crashing and birds chirping as much a part of the song’s stark ambiance as the delicate finger-picking featured throughout the track. It’s as if the song is begging to be listened to outdoors, and, if that isn’t an option, it takes you there anyway, like you’re hearing Kristian Garrard and Luke Bergman sing this around a campfire next to a secluded, tranquil lagoon. This fragile, acoustic number is understated in all the right ways, exquisitely restrained but still full of impact and emotion.
It’s also a track that can get lost amidst the chaos of our surroundings, as the din of our day is likely to drown out the wispy appeal of the song unless we take the time to unplug long enough to enjoy it. And, if we truly make the effort, the steely cityscape and the urban cacophony that typically goes with it is bound to lose its allure as we search for something far more natural. That’s ultimately the beauty of the simple but striking music of Thousands, that two guys can conjure up these types of strong feelings with just acoustic guitars and slightly tremulous vocals. Their bold austerity wins out in the end, as the city loses its synthetic hold and the fog gradually starts to lift.
The Sound of Everything will be released on March 21 ahead of Thousands’ first UK tour which begins on March 31 in London. For more information check out their website: www.thousandsband.com.
