SOTD #152 // Superman Revenge Squad: ‘Fairweather Friends’
With a new album out soon and a jaw-dropping live performance at John Peel Day there couldn’t be a better time to fall in love with Superman Revenge Squad. This dynamic duo are Ben Parker (singer, songwriter and guitarist) and Martin Webb (Cello); who across a number of releases have told stories of love, loss and goldfish with more wit and charm than could be reasonably expected.
Ben’s talent for compressing more words than would normally fit into a line combined with the gift of transforming the mundane into the extraordinary set him head and shoulders above other singer songwriters. His deadpan delivery backed by Martin’s long cello strokes creates a shadowy backdrop for his dark humour to take centre stage.
Today’s SOTD is ‘Fairweather Friends’, which opens his new album Dead Crow Blues. Its chorus recalls a dream of dying at the same time as an ex-friend and having to make uncomfortable small talk in the afterlife. So, grab your kryptonite and let the squad into your heart and record collections.
